CHAPTER NINE

A night visit to the hospital found that his wife had improved, and although still in intensive care she managed a short wave before lying down again.

He touched the glass window before exiting the hospital. This was one diversion he didn’t need right now, as the investigation was beginning to gain momentum.

There were other interruptions that he didn’t need, but decided to go ahead with it anyway.

He had been offered a police house in Welwyn Garden City but turned it down, knowing that if he was ever out of the job, he would be out of the house as well.

The dream house was 5 Oakland Avenue, in the suburbs of the new town, with a view that looked out across meadows to two large oak trees that spread their branches on the horizon. The villa consisted of twin garages, three double en suite rooms, a separate bathroom with a double walk-in shower, a bath and twin wash hand basins, a water closet. A large fitted kitchen, large lounge, and a modest-sized dining room that could sit eight persons. He could well afford the luxury, because of the money he had inherited from his dead friend, and his wealthy step-parents, so he alone took the decision to purchase it, while his wife was still in hospital. If anything it would be better for her, with a room on the ground floor, to help her recovery when she regained her strength and was allowed home. He left the removals to a respected removal firm in the area. The furniture and décor was chosen by an interior designer. The first piece of furniture to be sent to the dump was the double bed, which Amadeus had misgivings about. He did wait to discuss the sale or lease of their bungalow in Old Welwyn, which the overgrown village was now called.

Amadeus watched as his wife slowly returned to reasonable health. However, there were issues that would have to be addressed sooner rather than later, but now was not a good time.

Inspector Rupert stood looking out of the window of his spacious bright, air-conditioned and central-heated office. His thoughts were interrupted as Sergeant Buckingham entered.

“Sorry for the delay, sir, the typist was busy with other work. I’ve left the list with her anyway.”

The Inspector nodded. “What about those extra officers, Buckingham? We’ll need them to do good old-fashioned police work.”

“All ready and waiting in the incident room, sir, raring to go.” She smiled.

“Has D.S. Bradley got anything yet? We need those company listings desperately.”

“Patience, sir, the directory is rather thick, but I’ll speed him up,” she said, taking the heat out of the situation. Inspector Rupert knew how clever she was at changing the subject before he could reprimand her.

“Okay, let’s see who we’ve got to help us.” They walked to the incident room. The crowd of police officers stood to attention as they entered. “Please be seated,” the Inspector said as he walked to the information board. “Before I begin explaining the current investigation, there are a few points I want to put to you all.
